"A sculptor by training, Schilling has a deep appreciation for the rich and distinctive history of the material he so painstakingly carves in his Taking Form Jade Studio in Somerville, Massachusetts. He chooses the raw jade himself and then, as part of his process, uses a traditional loose-grit carving technique that was developed in china over seven thousand years ago. The simple forms he favors - inspired by seashells, seeds, leaves, nuts, pods, ax heads, the simple comma-like Japanese magatama - perfectly reveal the distinctive qualities, and the inherent power, of the jade he chooses. They also give his wearable sculptures a fresh, modernist look, while evoking past and distant cultures."
